The Billie Jean King Cup has unveiled the official 2024 Billie Jean King Cup by Gainbridge Finals artwork created by São Paulo-based artist Camila Pinheiro.
Inspired by the vibrant spirit of women supporting women and the unity displayed at the recent Olympic Games in Paris, this dynamic piece captures the essence of teamwork and the transformative power of sportsmanship.
It is Pinheiro’s second collaboration with Billie Jean King, having previously created the iconic US Open poster in 2023 to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of equal prize money in tennis and King’s incredible contributions to advancing equity.
Set against the picturesque backdrop of Malaga, the artwork features Billie Jean King at the centre, with rays of sunshine emanating in all directions. It invites fans to celebrate the incredible contributions of female athletes while honouring the legacy of the iconic Billie Jean King. Malaga, often called the “Soul of Spain,” played a key role in shaping the final design concept, with its abundant sunlight and vibrant atmosphere inspiring Pinheiro’s artistic vision.
Artist Camila Pinheiro shared her excitement: “When contacted about the possibility of creating the artwork for this year’s Billie Jean King Cup by Gainbridge, I was absolutely thrilled. It is such an honour to work with people I admire, and for a second time, and to contribute to something I truly believe in, such as women’s sports.”
Titled “Shine a Light," the artwork draws inspiration from Elton John’s heartfelt tribute to Billie Jean King in his song “Philadelphia Freedom.” Billie Jean King played a pivotal role in the formation and promotion of the Philadelphia Freedoms, a professional tennis team she co-founded in 1974 as part of World Team Tennis (WTT). The song's prominent and globally recognised lyric “Shine the light” inspired Pinheiro to feature rays of sun in the artwork, reflecting the spirit of empowerment and highlighting the importance of women in tennis and in sport overall.
Kerstin Lutz, CEO Billie Jean King Cup Limited, commented: “This artwork beautifully encapsulates the spirit of the Billie Jean King Cup and the incredible legacy of Billie Jean King herself. It’s a powerful reminder of the progress we’ve made in women’s sports and the bright future ahead.”
Fans can look forward to experiencing this captivating artwork at the Billie Jean King Cup by Gainbridge, where it will be showcased on posters and signage throughout the matches and featured on merchandise, including t-shirts, posters, bags, magnets, and more.
